“I’ve only tried to make the play that my mother would have liked to see and a pair of poor hands have stitched the shroud with which I will see her in heaven”.Angélica Liddell
Poetic, physical and visceral. This is Angélica Liddell’s theatre, one of
the most irreverent and unclassifiable creators today and one of the most
famous internationally. She returns to the Autumn Festival to present her
new montage: a réquiem to her mother who died in 2018. A theatrical speech,
an explosion of guilt and atonement where Liddell expresses her love and at
the same time, all her pain, converting the sublime into suffering.
Accompanied by the musician Niño de Elche. A show that will leave none
indifferent.
In the words of Angélica Liddell: “These funerals for my mother contain all
those sighs and in their most wrenching expression constitute a saga of the
search for the country of my ancestors: Extremadura, the heart, the land as
womb, the mother that must be returned to its entrails, newborn thanks to
disease and madness. A profound and painful exploration where death
transforms hate into love and mercy wells over. A ritual, that of the
“Empalaos” of Valverde de la Vera, that traces the seismic and tragic roots
of mourning, a road to atonement through a ravaged heart. A dead mother
that calls to me every night, as a child, to go with her. I’ve only tried
to make the play that my mother would have liked to see and a pair of poor
hands have stitched the shroud with which I will see her in heaven.”
A rib on the table: Mother
premiered on 27 March 2019 at the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne in Switzerland.
